Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he admitted that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
