Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
