Why this Democratic Party is Hiding its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This action by the Democratic National Committee to suppress the publication of its internal autopsy report concerning the last presidential race is shocking yet entirely predictable. Opposed to hard truths, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a PR firm rather than an electoral entity focused on cultivating local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate of Conformity

Unwilling to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the DNC has stayed under the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Making public such a report would have indicated that the leadership are interested to foster open debate regarding the errors which allowed the former president to return to the White House. Instead, the committee is acting under the pretense that there are no lessons to understand from the stunning loss of 2024.

Our guiding principle: is this good for winning elections? If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from our fundamental goal," a rationale which was presented to justify concealing the report.

Major Failures a Report Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront a series of difficult topics. These include:

  • Voter Disengagement: The loss of millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election proved pivotal in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The stubborn insistence by the incumbent to run again, alongside an extremely delayed withdrawal, is seen by some as robbing the party's base of open primaries.
  • Abandoning Everyday Americans: Amid inflation, the electoral effort allegedly ceding to powerful financial backers while failing to challenge the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Gaza Effect: The failure to shift a policy position on a ongoing war reportedly led to losing key demographic groups, particularly with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • Eroding Young Voter Backing: Polling data shows a huge decline of support for the party from voters aged 18-29.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

Choosing secrecy fits a pattern to avoid uncomfortable facts. It recalls an episode in which nearly all elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for seeking another term until a catastrophic campaign event led to an exit.

Meanwhile, large majorities of Democratic voters had been continually telling pollsters that they did not want the incumbent to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Questions

A thorough autopsy would also examine questions regarding campaign spending, including what sums flowed to high-priced advisors and ad buyers over the course of a campaign that burned through an enormous amount over a few months.

A Larger Problem

Ultimately, the secrecy of the official autopsy points to an allegiance toward the existing power structure who engineered a losing national race. The implication to the party's base – including millions of dedicated activists – is that they do not have a right to see the lessons the leadership have learned from an analysis based on conversations with insiders.

A political entity incapable to publicly examine its own failings will struggle to climb out of the rut which was so helpful to the rival party.
